More than 30 years of efforts to mitigate climate change have focused on “silver bullet” climate solutions, from carbon pricing in the policy arena to direct air capture as the technology du jour. But climate change is a “wicked problem,” and we should take Einstein’s quote to heart.

I started working on climate change in 1988 with the World Resources Institute (WRI) in Washington, D.C. After leaving WRI in 1991 I spent two decades working on climate change in capacities ranging from being part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to advising companies and organizations around the world as a management consultant.

I realized over time time that while almost infinite information is available for tackling climate change, get actionable climate knowledge to the right person at the right time is a massive knowledge management challenge as reflected in the cartoon above. I started building the Climate Web as a climate change knowledge solution in 2010.

The name of my current company, The Climatographers, reflects the joining of the concepts of climate change and cartography. In other words, how can we navigate our way to success on climate change when we don’t have a good map?

The Climatographer Newsletter brings you along as we explore the map to climate success, based on the 30+ years the Climatographers have been working on climate change, and the 20,000+ hours we’ve spent building the Climate Web. It will also introduce you to a metaphor that we think has huge potential for helping to tackle climate change, Climate Chess. Climate Chess is the ultimate planetary board game, and “Team No-Urgency” has been winning the game for decades. How can “Team Urgency” up its game? Subscribe to the newsletter to find out!
